Excellent First Day For UNC In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The fifth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team turned in a strong performance on the first day of the 2018 Freeman Memorial Championship at Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
Three of Carolina's four singles competitors picked up victories in flight one on Friday. No. 2 seed and 18th ranked Jessie Aney won 6-4, 6-4 over Dani Wagland (Texas). #124 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer defeated Naomie Rosenberg (Stanford), 6-0, 6-0, and Alexa Graham topped McCartney Kessler of Florida, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Maggie Kane was upended by Oklahoma State's Sofia Blanco, 7-6, 6-0
In round two of flight one singles, Aney topped #100 Terri Fleming (UCLA) 6-4, 6-4, and Graham took down No. 6 seed and 44th ranked Dzina Milvanovic (Pepperdine) in a marathon three-setter, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
Izumi Asano of host UNLV turned away Ouellet-Pizer in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Tar Heel freshman Anna Harmon was upended, 6-4, 6-1, by UNLV's Jovana Kenic in a flight two singles match.
In doubles, No. 4 seed and 51st ranked Makenna Jones and Ouellet-Pizer was too much for Peggy Porter and Katie Kubics of defending national-champion Florida, 7-5.
No. 2 seed and 18th ranked Aney and Graham won 6-3 over UNLV's Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li, 6-3, and No. 3 seed and 20th ranked Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco of Oklahoma State took down Carolina's Cassandra Vazquez and Kane, 6-3.
