Seven Tar Heels In Initial NCAA Panel Rankings
January 18, 2018 | Wrestling
INDIANAPOLIS --- The NCAA released the first of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2017-18 wrestling season Thursday, and seven members of the No. 25 North Carolina wrestling team were listed. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. This year's event is March 15-17 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
Redshirt senior Troy Heilmann leads the way for Carolina as the No. 4-ranked 149-pounder in the country. Heilmann is 22-3 on the year with a 12-2 mark in dual competition entering Friday's ACC opener at Virginia
Zach Sherman (No. 20, 133), A.C. Headlee (18, 141), Kennedy Monday (17, 157), Chip Ness (17, 184), Danny Chaid (15, 197) and Cory Daniel (24, 285) are also ranked in the panel's initial poll. Following the end of the regular season, the NCAA will release conference allocation numbers to determine how many automatic spots will be up for grabs at the 2018 ACC Championships. Carolina will host the ACC event on Saturday, March 3, at Carmichael Arena.
Wrestlers in each weight class will be measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches' rankings to earn spots in their qualifying tournaments for the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The coaches' rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. For ranking purposes, coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled within the last 30 days.
