Sanford Named ACC Freshman Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's Alle Sanford has been named the ACC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week.
Sanford, ranked No. 9 nationally in singles, was key in North Carolina (6-0) posting victories over East Carolina, Davidson, Winthrop and Illinois last week. The rookie from Westerville, Ohio, took down 52nd-ranked Celia Ruiz of East Carolina, 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 1-0 (13-11), and Davidson's Anna Feaster, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles matches.
In doubles, Sanford and teammate Sara Daavettila - No. 37 in the country - was 4-0 on the week, with wins over East Carolina's Maria Gomez and Alisa Diercksen (6-3), Davidson's Feaster and Samantha Armas (6-0), Winthrop's Alisa Soloveva and Taylor Van Eck (6-0), and Illinois' Daniela Novak and Sasha Belaya (6-3).
Winner of the Oracle/ITA Masters back in the fall, Sanford has begun her rookie season with a 17-3 overall singles record, and owns a 10-3 mark playing alongside Daavettila.
No. 5 Carolina has qualified for the 2018 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship, held Feb. 9-12 in Madison, Wisconsin. The Tar Heels won the event in 2013 and 2015, and has been runner-up each of the last two seasons.
