January 6, 2018 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL --- No. 4 Troy Heilmann scored in the final 15 seconds to beat No. 11 Josh Maruca at 149 pounds but No. 11 Arizona State took seven of 10 bouts for a 27-9 win over No. 19 North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. The Sun Devils pulled away at the middle weights with a pin from No. 13 Anthony Valencia at 165 and a tech fall from No. 1 Zahid Valencia at 174 to secure the dual.
After three straight ASU (3-2) decisions, Heilmann got the Tar Heels on the board in a thrilling bout at 149. The redshirt senior trailed Maruca 4-2 after an opening period in which both wrestlers hit with stall warnings. It was 5-5 after two before a Maruca takedown gave him an 8-7 lead with under a minute left. Heilmann scored at the edge of the mat in short time and rode out the period to pick up his sixth win over a ranked opponent and improve to 21-3 on the year.
No. 7 Josh Shields beat Kennedy Monday at 157 before the Valencia brothers put up consecutive bonus-point wins. Anthony Valencia got a second period pin at 165 before top-ranked and undefeated Zahid Valencia's third period tech fall.
Carolina got two more wins late in the dual. No. 20 Chip Ness trailed 5-3 after an action-packed first period against Kordell Norfleet at 184. But the redshirt junior got the last three takedowns of the match to score an 11-7 decision, his sixth consecutive win.
Danny Chaid picked up his ninth victory in his last 10 bouts with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Cade Belshay at 197. Chaid had the match's lone takedown in the second period and added enough riding time in the third to wrap up the decision.
No. 4 Tanner Hall closed out the dual with a 10-2 major at heavyweight.
UNC is back in action next Friday as the Tar Heels travel to Rutgers before opening ACC duals at Virginia on Jan. 19.
