Carolina Softball Tops UCF in Extra Innings, Falls to Providence

LONGWOOD, Fla. – North Carolina wrapped up the UCF Friends of Jaclyn Tournament with a 2-0 extra-inning win over UCF after falling to Providence, 2-1, earlier in the day at Soldiers Creek Park. Following Sunday's split outcome, the Tar Heels improve to 3-1 while the Friars and Golden Knights sit at 1-4 and 3-2, respectively.
GAME ONE – vs. Providence: L, 2-1
Despite Katie Grace Olinger's five strikeouts in her first complete game, the Tar Heels could not overcome the Friars' late sacrifice fly for the 2-1 win.
Leah Murray and Sierra Parkinson each logged two hits against Providence with seniors Taylor Wike and Katelyn Shifflett had one apiece.
Murray put down a bunt to reach first before stealing second, Kiani Ramsey advanced her to third, but Carolina could not bring her home in the first.
In the second, Parkinson battled through a nine-pitch at-bat to send the ball to right-center for a single. In her first game of the season, Shifflett laced one to the same spot for a two-out single.
The Friars got on the board first on Vanessa Portillo's RBI-single through the left side that brought home Emma Lee who singled and stole second and third.
Carolina answered back to tie up the game in the bottom of the inning on a Wike RBI-single that brought Murray home after her liner and a pair of stolen bases.
Providence answered back with Portillo's sac-fly to center for a 2-1 advantage in the fifth inning. North Carolina made contact in the final innings but could not bring a runner home for the win.
Katie Grace Olinger took the loss while Providence's Miranda Trinidad picked up her first win.
GAME TWO – vs. UCF: W, 2-0 (8 innings)
After seven scoreless innings between Carolina and UCF, the Tar Heels were able to put two runs on the board to secure the win with the international tie-breaker in effect.
Brittany Pickett went the distance for the win with Parkinson driving home the game-winning run. Pickett laced a single to right-center for an insurance run that allowed Murray to score and secure a 2-0 win.
The Tar Heels logged nine hits throughout the contest with multi-hit games from Murray, Parkinson, and Wike who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Katie Bailiff's quick arm to Wike caught the runner stealing second to keep the game scoreless after two. Pickett hurled back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Knights at bay.
Carolina threatened in multiple innings throughout the game. Parkinson sent a leadoff single to center before Wike advanced her to second on a bunt-single, but Carolina could not capitalize in the fourth. Ramsey sent the ball down the left line for a single in the fourth. A sacrifice bunt and a fly-out allowed her to reach third, but she was left on base.
Murray led off the sixth with a bunt, however a double play cleared the bases. Wike sent her third single of the day to right. Berlynne Delamora drew a walk and Jordyn Huecker came in to run. However UCF's Alea White hurled a strikeout to end the inning.
After seven scoreless innings, the international tie breaker came into play putting Kristina Burkhardt on second. Murray logged her second hit of the game to put runners on the corners before Parkinson roped an RBI-single to left-center for a 1-0 lead. Pickett, now 3-0 on the season, secured a 2-0 win with an RBI-single before retiring the last of the Golden Knights in order from the circle.
The Tar Heels return to action Wednesday at Elon for a 4:30 p.m. matchup in Elon, North Carolina.
