Carolina Falls to Oklahoma in the Team Competition

NORMAN, Okla. — The North Carolina gymnastics team lost to the No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday, 195.750 to 198.150.
Despite taking second in the team competition, Carolina saw success elsewhere in the competition against the two-time defending national champions. The Tar Heels set a new season-best overall score of 195.750 and also three new season-high rotation scores on vault (49.175), floor exercise (49.275), and beam (49.225). Five gymnasts collectively set two new personal records and tied six career-best scores across all events. Additionally, Carolina improved upon nine individual scores to set new season bests for seven different student-athletes.
"We talked about the fact that we want to compete up to the level and certainly Oklahoma is a phenomenal team," said UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "We didn't come in here thinking we were going to necessarily outscore them, but we wanted to do quality routines that were impressive. They've got well educated fans here and they appreciate good gymnastics. We gave them some things to appreciate and to enjoy and some solid performances on those last two events… We're walking away feeling good about the team performance. The team feels really good."
UNC began the meet in the same rotation order as they faced last week against New Hampshire. The Heels totaled 48.075 on the uneven bars in their opening event. Kaitlynn Hedelund led the team with a seventh-place 9.775 which ties the season-high score she set against Towson. Morgan Lane earned eighth-place honors with her score of 9.750 and Mekyllah Williams followed closely behind with her bars score of 9.725. Madison Nettles and Grace Donaghy contributed 9.700 and 9.125, respectively, to the Tar Heels' rotation score.
Carolina found a rhythm in the second rotation on vault and set a new season-high rotation score of 49.175. Madison Nettles and Khazia Hislop finished in a three-way tie for fourth-place accolades with scores of 9.875, a career-high for Nettles and a matched career-best for Hislop. Kaitlynn Hedelund followed closely behind in a tie for seventh-place with her season-high score of 9.850. Alexis Allen set a new season-high with her score of 9.825 on vault and Madison Hargrave tied her career record of 9.750.
In the third rotation, the Tar Heels set another season-high rotation score and earned a combined 49.275 on floor exercise. Khazia Hislop led Carolina with her third-place score of 9.900, breaking the 9.900 mark for the third time. Morgan Lane followed in sixth with a season-high 9.875 on floor and Mikayla Robinson took seventh after receiving a 9.850 for her performance. Lily Dean and Madison Nettles tied for eighth-place honors with scores of 9.825, making this Dean's second time tying the career-high score she set in the season opener. Madison Hargrave also set a career record on floor exercise with a score of 9.800.
Despite struggles earlier in the season, Carolina wrapped up the night on balance beam and totaled a season-best 49.225 in the event. Morgan Lane tied her career-high score of 9.950 and earn second-place accolades in the beam competition. Khazia Hislop also tied her personal record of 9.900 on beam, tying two Sooners for fourth-place honors. Alexis Allen just missed her career-high by 0.025 and earned a seventh-place 9.875 for her performance on beam. Raine Gordon set a career-high score of 9.825 and Kaitlynn Hedelund topped off the event for Carolina with her score of 9.675.

Although the Tar Heels have one more meet before they return home to Carmichael Arena, Carolina gymnastics will at least return to the state of North Carolina for competition next Saturday, Feb. 17th at 6 p.m in Raleigh, N.C. UNC will face off against NC State for the second time this season as well as Michigan and Brown.
