Carolina Opens 4 Under Par
Senior Ben Griffin birdied his first four holes and finished with a 3-under 69 and Austin Hitt shot 1-under-par to lead the University of North Carolina to a 4-under finish to tie for third place after round one at the John Burns Intercollegiate.
UNLV posted four scores under par and three rounds in the 60s to take the lead with an 18-under-par 270, 13 strokes ahead of Texas A&M and 14 clear of the Tar Heels and BYU.
Griffin is tied for seventh and Hitt is tied for 18th. Twenty-five players played the opening round under par, led by UNLV's Shintaro Bar, who shot a 7-under 65.
Carolina's Jose Montaño and freshman Ryan Gerard are tied for 26th after even par 72s and William Register is tied for 46th after a 74.
Tailin Song, playing as an individual, opened with a 73.
The 54-hole event is being played at the Wailua Golf Course.
