UNC Finishes Third in First Competition of the Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Tar Heels earned third-place accolades in the team competition at Saturday's meet against NC State, Michigan, and Brown in Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C. Carolina scored a season-high 196.050 overall while Michigan took home first with a score of 196.775, NC State second with 196.575, and Brown fourth with 192.450.

"We dominated the meet on floor," said UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "We had great beam routines. We had great vaults. We just gave up too much on bars, but really, really proud of the way the team competed on the other three events, particularly floor. I thought floor was exceptional."

Carolina gymnastics earned their highest competition score since March 20, 2010 when the Tar Heels competed scored 196.225 against Rutgers. North Carolina also extended their streak of earnings scores of at least 49.000 in three or more rotations, the first time in over 16 years. This meet also marks the second time this season that UNC has earned event scores of at least 49.000 on vault, beam, and floor.

Like last weekend against Oklahoma, Carolina began the night on the uneven bars and totaled 48.200 in the event. Senior Madison Nettles finished in a four-way tie for sixth-place honors with her season-high score of 9.825. Sophomore Mekyllah Williams, senior Morgan Lane, and sophomore Alexis Allen all earned thirteenth-place scores of 9.725 for their bars routines, a career-best for Allen. Senior Kaitlynn Hedelund contributed 9.200 to the Tar Heels' rotation score.

In fourth heading into the second rotation, the Tar Heels redeemed themselves on beam and earned an event score of 49.150. Sophomore Khazia Hislop led the team with her third-place score of 9.900 as she tied her career-high on balance beam for the second straight week. Kaitlynn Hedelund earned a season-high 9.875 to earn ninth-place honors, and sophomore Raine Gordon and Morgan Lane ended in a five-way tie for tenth with scores of 9.825, a matched personal best for Gordon. Freshman Rylie Dewhurst improved her career-best score on beam by over 0.500 and tied Alexis Allen after earning a score of 9.750 in this week's competition.

The momentum continued into the third rotation for Carolina as they leapt into third place following their record team performance on beam. Now on floor, the Tar Heels kicked it into high gear and received a resounding rotation score of 49.425, the highest floor score since Carolina earned 49.425 on floor against Rutgers on March 20, 2010. UNC swept the podium as Madison Nettles took home first-place honors with her career-high score of 9.950. Morgan Lane matched her career record and tied Khazia Hislop for second as both gymnasts earned scores of 9.925. Mikayla Robinson followed in eighth after receiving a score of 9.825 from judges and Madison Hargrave set a new personal record with her ninth-place score of 9.775.

In the fourth rotation on vault, Carolina maintained their third-place ranking and accumulated a season-high 49.275 in the event, their highest vault score since the NCAA Regional competition on April 16, 2007. Khazia Hislop earned a first-place score of 9.925, a new career best for the sophomore standout. Madison Nettles tied her career-high 9.875 on vault for the second time and matched the season-high score she earned last weekend in Oklahoma. Morgan Lane, Alexis Allen, and Kaitlynn Hedelund all earned scores of 9.825 to finish in a four-way tie for tenth. Lane's performance was a new season best and Allen matched her season-best performance against the Sooners. Madison Hargrave finished 15th with her career-high score of 9.775.

Morgan Lane matched her season-best all-around score of 39.300 to take home her second-straight second-place honors. Lane consistently improved her all-around total by 0.100 for two consecutive weeks before matching her season-high this week. The senior has earned two first-place accolades and now holds two second-place titles in the all-around this year.

"We're getting really good leadership from the seniors," said Galvin. "Madison [Nettles], Morgan [Lane], and Kaitlynn [Hedelund] — they contributed between the three of them ten spots in the line-up out of 24. That's close to half the line-up coming from the senior class. And they're competing with confidence. Even though Kaitlynn made a mistake on bars, it wasn't a lack of confidence. She just got too eager. I'm hoping [bars] is gnawing at them a little bit because I think they feel confident about the other three events now and they know what we're capable of on bars."
