Tar Heels Take Second at New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. — Though the team led the competition in each of the first three rotations, Carolina gymnastics fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats, 196.125 to 195.075, on the Wildcats' home turf.
"It was a very exciting meet through the first three rotations," said UNC head coach Derek Galvin. "Two EAGL teams both performing at a very high level. The Tar Heels were in position to take it, but we didn't execute on beam to the level we have been in training. Individually, Morgan [Lane] had a great beam performance. We have a week to regroup on beam before we face Oklahoma. Floor as a team was strong, with Khazia [Hislop] routine in particular. Bars and vault were also solid events. Maddie Nettles had three strong events, and the entire bar line-up stepped up a level. We want to carry our bars, vault and floor performances forward and bring beam up to that competitive level."
Despite the team loss, Carolina had a night of individual records in Lundholm Gym. The Tar Heels set ten new season-high scores and three new career-bests. They also collectively tied one season-best score and four personal records over all four rotations. The team also set a new season-best rotation score of 49.100 on bars and tied season-highs on vault (49.000) and floor exercise (49.250).
Carolina kicked off the night with a season-best team performance on the uneven bars, taking a 0.200 lead after totaling 49.100 in the first rotation. Morgan Lane and Grace Donaghy led the Tar Heels with scores of 9.850 to earn fourth-place honors in the event. Lane's performance marked her best of the season and also tied her career-high score, and Donaghy set a new personal record for her bars routine. Raine Gordon followed closely behind in sixth with her own career-best score of 9.825. Mekyllah Williams tied her career-best bars score of 9.800 for seventh-place accolades and Madison Nettles placed eighth with her score of 9.775.
Building on their momentum, the Tar Heels took home three of the top five scores on vault after tying their season-best score of 49.000 in the event. Madison Nettles and Khazia Hislop tied for second-place honors with scores of 9.850, a season-high for Nettles. Kaitlynn Hedelund's 9.800 tied for fourth while Madison Hargrave and Alexis Allen ended in a four-way tie for sixth-place accolades with scores of 9.750. Hargrave's performance on vault also tied the best of her career.
Carolina tied another one of their season-best rotation scores, this time on floor with a score of 49.250. Khazia Hislop took home one more first-place score of 9.925 while Mikayla Williams and Madison Nettles followed in a three-way tie for second with scores of 9.850. Lily Dean tied her career-best score of 9.825 to tie for fifth-place honors and Morgan Lane contributed a seventh-place 9.800 to the team's floor total. Madison Hargrave's score of 9.775 also marked a new personal record for the junior gymnast.
The fourth and final rotation on beam again posed a challenge for Carolina. Earning a rotation total of 47.725, the Tar Heels fell behind the Wildcats despite the success of the first three rotations. Morgan Lane led Carolina with a second-place score of 9.875, a season-high on beam. Kaitlynn Hedelund's eight-place finish and score of 9.675 was the next best for the Heels. Alexis Allen, Lily Dean, and Khazia Hislop followed with scores of 9.500, 9.425, and 9.250, respectively.
Morgan Lane also improved her all-around total by 0.100 in her second appearance in the event. Lane's overall score of 39.200 included 9.675 on vault, 9.850 on bars, 9.875 on beam, and 9.800 on floor. She earned her second-straight first-place accolades in the all-around competition, besting New Hampshire's Danielle Doolin by 0.275.
Carolina continues their season on Sunday, Feb. 11th at 3:45 p.m. against assistant coach Taylor Spear's alma mater, Oklahoma University.
"The Sooners are the number one team in the nation, and they are defending national champions," said Galvin. "It will be a great opportunity for our team to compete with them. We are excited to travel to Oklahoma next weekend and are looking forward to the opportunity."
