Sophomore named ACC Co-Player of the Week
Sophomore William Blumberg has moved to the top of the new ITA Men's Tennis Singles Rankings, announced on Tuesday. Blumberg, from Greenwich, Conn., was ranked No. 2 in the fall and moved up from No. 4 in the most recent poll.
He is the first UNC men's tennis player to be ranked No. 1 in singles.
Blumberg went a combined 6-0 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships over the weekend, earning three wins at No. 1 singles and three wins at No. 1 doubles. His singles wins came over players ranked No. 5 (Ohio State's Mikael Torpegaard), No. 28 (Notre Dame's Alex Lebedev) and No. 84 (Texas A&M's Patrick Kypson).
He was honored as Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week for his performance at the tournament in Seattle.
He is 5-2 in singles this spring and 11-2 for the year after winning the ITA All-American Championship. It was the first time a Tar Heel had claimed that title.
Other Tar Heels in the singles rankings are freshman Benjamin Sigoiun at No. 44 and senior Robert Kelly at No. 105. Click here for full rankings.
In doubles, Blumberg and Kelly are ranked No. 6. For full doubles rankings, click here.
The Tar Heels, 8-2 on the season, are ranked No. 6 nationally. (For the full team rankings, click here.) They'll open ACC play on March 2, hosting Virginia Tech at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
"We learned a lot in Seattle," UNC coach Sam Paul said. "The tournament was great for us. We're looking forward to the outdoor season and continuing to get better."
