Greene Earns Second ACC Performer Of The Week Honor
February 20, 2018 | Track & Field
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's Nicole Greene was announced as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Field Performer of the Week for the second time this season, announced Tuesday by the league.
Greene, a sophomore from Ponte Vedra, Fla., is awarded the honor after matching her high jump personal best Sunday with a jump of 6-2 (1.88 meters) to earn the bronze medal at the USATF Indoor Championships.Â
Her mark is nearly five inches better than the next best jump in the ACC this season – 1.76 meters (5-9.25). She has jumped 6-2 (1.88m) twice this season and at least 6-0.75 (1.85m) in each of her four meets. Greene currently ranks third in the NCAA.Â
Her effort at the USATF Indoor Championships placed third behind 2016 world champion Vashti Cunningham (1.97 meters) and 2014 high jump outdoor national champion Inika McPherson (1.91 meters).
This is the sixth time in her three years that Greene has been named ACC Field Performer of the Week - she received the honor once as a freshman (Jan. 12), three times as a sophomore (Jan. 24, Feb.7, Feb.14) and on January 16 of this season after her 6-2 (1.88m) jump at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup.
Conference teams and student-athletes will now gear up for the 2018 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at Clemson this Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 22-24). Please see the following link for more information, including a schedule of events: http://theacc.co/2018ACCITF
The other ACC Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for week seven at a glance:
ACC Men's Track Performer of the Week
Yared Nuguse, Notre Dame
Nuguese posted a sub-four minute mile split of 3:57.39 as the Fighting Irish DMR relay team posted a new school and ACC record unconverted time of 9:28.79 at the Alex Wilson Invitational. Nuguse teamed with Jacob Dumford, Elijah Silva and Edward Cheatham to break the previous league and school mark of 9:29.43, which Notre Dame set at the same meet in 2014.
ACC Women's Track Performer of the Week
Elly Henes, NC State
Henes made NC State track and field history Friday evening, posting a program-best indoor 5K time of 15:43.84 at the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. Henes, an All-American cross country runner for the Wolfpack, bested her previous PR of 15:49.29, which she ran earlier this season at the Boston University Season Opener. Henes placed first at the meet and moved into the top-three of the national standings with her converted time of 15:36.67.
ACC Men's Field Performer of the Week
Austin Droogsma, Florida State
Droogsma put together the finest shot put series of his career Saturday at Notre Dame's Loftus Center, winning the Alex Wilson Invitational with a lifetime-best opening throw of 20.10 meters (65-11.5), which vaulted his to No. 4 on the national descending order list. The opening throw was one of four in his series which traveled further than any previous mark – indoors or outdoors – in his career. Not only has the redshirt senior from Gulf Breeze, Fla. native led the ACC the entire season, all five legal marks (20.10, 19.81, 19.80, 19.62, 19.91) are more than a meter longer than the second-best mark in the conference this season. Droogsma is just the second Seminole in program history to eclipse the 20-meter mark indoors. Only Garrett Johnson, who holds the ACC Indoor Championships record (20.17m/66-2.25, 2006), has thrown further among Seminoles.
