Tar Heels Stand Fourth After Opening Day Of ACC Championships

Action continues Thursday at Greensboro Aquatics Center
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team stands in fourth place Wednesday after the opening day of the 65th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships being held at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
On the meet's opening day, Greg Duncan took the title in three-meter diving while the 200-yard medley relay team placed sixth and the 800-yard freestyle relay squad placed ninth.
The three-meter diving event was held as part of last week's women's swimming and men's and women's diving meet in Greensboro. The points for three-meter diving were added to team scores on Wednesday.
Carolina's 200-yard medley relay team placed sixth in a time of 1:25.92. The Tar Heel relay consisted of freshman Alvin Jiang swimming the backstroke leg, freshman Valdas Abaliksta swimming the breaststroke leg, junior Nick Loomis completing the butterfly leg and senior J.T. Casey swimming the freestyle anchor leg.
The Tar Heels' 800-yard freestyle relay team finished ninth in a time of 6:24.25. The relay consisted of senior Henry Campbell (1:34.82), freshman Dimitrios Dimitriou (1:34.23), senior Philip Perdue (1:38.78) and freshman Hans Schroeder (1:36.42). Campbell's leadoff leg on the relay was a career best in the 200-yard freestyle for the senior, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:36.15. He is now the second fastest performer in the event in UNC history behind Jorden Merrilees who went 1:34.18 in 2017.
In the three-meter diving competition, freshman Greg Duncan won the championship with a score of 416.10, edging Joshua Davidson of Florida State by seven-tenths of a point. Redshirt junior Sean Burston finished ninth with 330.85 points and sophomore Bryan Allen placed 22nd with 277.65 points.
Action continues on Thursday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Thursday's events include the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
