Three swimmers and three divers score on second day.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior freestyler Henry Campbell led a group of six Tar Heel swimmers and divers who scored in individual events on the second day of the 65th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
Six Tar Heels scored in individual events, including three divers who competed last week as part of the diving championships conducted in conjunction with the women's ACC meet.
The top finisher for the Tar Heels Thursday was senior Henry Campbell who placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:16.31. Campbell had qualified ninth in the preliminaries and he had a nice drop in time between his prelim and final times, going from 4:18.49 to 4:16.31. Freshman Dimitrios Dimitriou of Athens, Greece, also swam in the consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle, placing 15th with a time of 4:22.54. He had recorded a career best time of 4:19.59 in Thursday's preliminaries.
"Henry and Dimitrios gave their all tonight," says UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "After missing the A final, Henry swam a more consistent race tonight and went faster. We know both Henry and Dimitrios have more to bring to the team over the next two days."
Senior J.T. Casey turned in a pair of solid swims in the 50-yard freestyle Thursday. Coming into the meet with a career best time of 20.21 in the event, Casey clocked a 19.87 in the prelims and then almost matched that at night, going 19.93 and placing 21st in the event.
"We are happy for J.T. for getting back tonight in his first final and for getting under 20," says DeSelm. "J.T. has been an awesome member of our team and has worked hard to improve every year."
The Tar Heels' 200-yard freestyle relay placed eighth with a time of 1:18.61. The relay included freshman Alvin Jiang (20.07), J.T. Casey (19.38), freshman Valdas Abaliksta (19.37) and sophomore Greg Brocato (19.79). Jiang's leadoff time of 20.07 was his career best. His previous best time was 20.21.
The results from the one-meter diving, whose points were added to the team totals on Thursday, included freshman Greg Duncan's dominant first-place performance in which he scored a school record 428.05 points. Sean Burston finished 16th with 285.90 points and Bryan Allen placed 19th with 277.05 points.
Friday events include the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. Finals begin at 6 p.m. and will also include a timed final in the 400-yard medley relay.
