Next up for Tar Heels is the ACC Championships
The University of North Carolina men's and 18th-ranked women's swimming teams traveled to Duke Saturday for day two and hosted the last day of the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational on Sunday in Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.
Saturday in Durham, freshmen Maddie Baker and Tyler Hill, as well as sophomore Andrew Heise earned career best times. Baker finished first in the 400-yard individual medley with a career best time of 4:18.84. Hill broke his career best in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 48.80. Heise's 100-yard breaststroke time of 56.48 brought him a new career best.
"It's always fun to see what people can do with hard training and putting their efforts forward with their team cheering behind them," head coach Rich DeSelm commented.
Sunday in Chapel Hill on the men's side, Hill scored a career best in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.42. Freshman James Courtney placed first in the 200-backstroke and touched the wall at 1:48.23. Senior Bailey Burt and freshman Coleman Manchester earned career best times in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 1:50.57 and 1:50.81, respectively.
The Tar Heel women featured three first-place finishes on Sunday. Sophomore Erica Wirth won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:46.01. Junior Kate Boyer touched the wall first at a time of 51.13 in the 100-yard freestyle. Baker continued her record-setting weekend by setting another career best, this time in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.18.
"We got some nice things accomplished," said DeSelm about the weekend. "Over the course of the meet we had 40 individual swims and 21 of them ended up being lifetime best times."
The Tar Heel women's swimming team and men's and women's diving contingents return to action in Greensboro, N.C. for the ACC Championships February 14-17.
