With the returns of leading goal scorer Chris Cloutier and top assist-maker Andy Matthews, the North Carolina men's lacrosse team entered this season featuring yet another strong attack.
Still, someone needed to fill the void created by the departure of Luke Goldstock, who scored 32 goals last season to finish with 120 in his career.
That replacement has proven to be junior Timmy Kelly. And in the Tar Heels' season-opening 17-10 win over Lafayette on Saturday, he showed why coach Joe Breschi is optimistic about his move from the first midfield unit to the attack.
Kelly matched Tanner Cook with a team-high three goals. The hat trick marked the second of Kelly's career, with the other coming in last season's opener against UMBC. He also recorded an assist against the Leopards.
Kelly has demonstrated playmaking skills throughout his UNC career. Last season, he led the midfield with 18 goals and was the team's fourth-leading point producer with 23 points.
But with Kelly now at attack, the Tar Heels hope he can add a new element to the unit with his ability to shoot and create offense.
Hargrave's highlights
Although she competed in just two events during the gymnastics team's 196.125-195.075 loss against New Hampshire on Friday, Madison Hargrave's performance highlighted a night of individual records.
On the vault, Hargrave finished in a four-way tie for sixth with a score of 9.750. That matched a career best. She then registered a career-high score of 9.775 on the floor exercise, helping the Tar Heels tie a season-best rotation score of 49.250.
Peck pushes men's tennis to win
After dropping the doubles point Saturday, the men's tennis team stormed back in singles for a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 12 Illinois, thanks in large part to the heroics of Josh Peck.
With the score tied at 3, Peck dropped his second set in a tie-breaker. But he quickly rebounded and won the third set 6-2, helping the Tar Heels improve to 6-0 on the season.
Peck, who went 11-4 in singles last season, is 4-0 this season.
Freshmen swimmers shine
Multiple members of the North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams set lifetime bests during the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational over the weekend. Among them, freshmen Maddie Baker and Tyler Hill led the way.
Baker won the women's 200-yard individual medley with a career-best time of 2:00.87 on Friday. In Saturday's 400-yard individual medley and Sunday's 200-yard butterfly, she recorded personal-best times of 4:18.84 and 1:59.18, respectively.
On the men's side, Hill broke his career best in the 200-yard individual medley on Friday, touching the wall at 1:48.86. He then set lifetime bests in Saturday's 100-yard backstroke and Sunday's 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 48.80 and 44.42, respectively.
Crist clears 7 feet
High jumper Draven Crist, a redshirt sophomore, had cleared 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches (2.08 meters) three times in his college career, including twice this season. But he had never cleared a higher bar, until Saturday.
Competing in the Art & Linda Maillet UNC Open, Crist, 6-foot-10, set a new personal best and cleared his own height when he jumped 7-0 ¼ (2.14 meters).
Crist's jump marked the highest by a Tar Heel since Dylan Moore jumped 7-0 ¼ during the 2012 indoor season. It is also the fifth best in the ACC this season.
Kea keeps scoring
For the fourth time this season and second time in four games, Paris Kea eclipsed 30 points in the women's basketball team's 92-72 loss against Miami on Sunday.
Kea made 11-of-16 shots, including all five of her 3-point attempts, to finish with 31 points. She was the first player to score at least 30 against Miami since Georgia Tech's Tyaunna Marshall had 37 on Feb. 24, 2013.
Through 23 games, Kea is averaging 19.8 points.
Daniel continues torrid run
After starting the season with a 9-5 record, Cory Daniel has become a stalwart at the back end of the wrestling team's lineup.
In 25th-ranked UNC's 21-9 loss at No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 18 Daniel upended No. 17 Andrew Dunn in a 3-2 decision. Daniel has won 12 of his last 13 matches at heavyweight, dating back to his victory over Nebraska's David Jensen on Dec. 17.
