MADISON, Wisconsin - Sophomore Sara Daavettila clinched the deciding point to lift third-seed North Carolina to a 4-2 victory over Ole Miss on Friday in the opening round of the 2018 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship.
No. 5 North Carolina (7-0) will face sixth-seed Texas Tech (5-0) on Saturday in a quarterfinal match at the Nielson Tennis Stadium. The No. 8 Red Raiders dispatched UCLA, 4-2, on Friday afternoon.
The Tar Heels won the critical doubles point when Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones won 6-4 on court three. The 20th ranked tandem of Daavettila and Alle Sanford cruised to a 6-1 win on court two over No. 27 Natalie Suk and Sabina Machalova to earn the first Tar Heel victory.
The Rebels quickly drew even with UNC when Anna Vrbenska picked up a straight-set win on court six.
