Tar Heels No. 2 Seed In West Regional

CHAPEL HILL—Defending NCAA champion North Carolina is the No. 2 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament West Regional.  The Tar Heels will face No. 15 seed Lipscomb on Friday in Charlotte. Â
The NCAA released its tournament bracket on Sunday evening and will announce game times and television information soon.
The winner of Friday's game between Carolina and Lipscomb will advance to Sunday's second-round contest against the winner of the game between No. 7 seed Texas A&M and No. 10 seed Providence.
The winner of that second-round contest will move on to the NCAA regionals the following weekend in Los Angeles.  The top seeds in the West Regional include No. 1 seed Xavier, No. 3 seed Michigan and No. 4 seed Gonzaga.
The tournament's No. 1 seeds include overall No. 1 Virginia (South), Villanova (East), Kansas (Midwest) and Xavier (West).
Carolina is making its 49th NCAA Tournament appearance, second-most in NCAA history behind Kentucky's 57. Â
The Tar Heels are a No. 2 seed for the ninth time (1981, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1995, 2001, 2011, 2018) and have a 22-8 record as a No. 2 seed. UNC advanced to the Final Four in 1981 and 1995 as a No. 2 seed.
Roy Williams is making his 28th NCAA Tournament appearance as a head coach, tied for third-most in NCAA history with Bobby Knight.  Only Mike Krzyzewski (34) and Jim Boeheim (33) have more NCAA appearances than Williams. Dean Smith made 27 NCAA appearances in his 36-year career as UNC's head coach. Â
Williams has won three NCAA championships, made nine Final Four appearances and led his teams to six NCAA championship games. He has coached his teams to 76 NCAA Tournament wins, second-most in history.
Carolina has won six NCAA championships (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2017) and made an NCAA-record 20 Final Four appearances. The Tar Heels are second in NCAA Tournament history in games (168), wins (123) and winning percentage (.732).
The Atlantic Coast Conference posted nine teams in the 2018 NCAA field, most of any conference in the nation.
