Tar Heels In Third Through 36 Holes Of BYU At Entrada Classic
March 12, 2018 | Women's Golf
ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of North Carolina women's golf team is in third at 9-over par after playing 36 holes of the BYU at Entrada Classic Monday. Just nine shots back from the lead, the Tar Heels shot 4-over 292 in the first round and 5-over 293 in round two.
Junior Kelly Whaley is leading the way for Carolina through the first two rounds. After shooting a 75 over the first 18 holes, Whaley finished with a 71 and is tied for 15th at 2-over par heading into Tuesday.
Freshman Ava Bergner, senior Bryana Nguyen and sophomore Mariana Ocano are all tied for 20th at 3-over par through 36 holes. Nguyen and Ocano both shot even-par 72 in the first round and 75s over the final 18. Bergner turned in the reverse, shooting a 75 in round one before following it up with a 72.
Sophomore Brynn Walker shot a 73 in round one and a 79 in round two as she sits in 36th at 8-over par heading into the final round.
The Tar Heels started slow, shooting 5-over through the first 9 holes of the day, but used nine birdies on the back nine in round one and nine birdies on the front nine in round two to climb up the leaderboard. As the day grew long, the Carolina golfers began missing a few putts but are in position to compete for a tournament title on Tuesday.
"Several of them had good rounds," head coach Jan Mann said. "I was pleased with how the girls handled the course because visually some of the holes are very daunting with the volcanic rock. But we've talked about how the fairways are just like any other fairways. If they focus on hitting it to certain places and just put blinders on in regards to the rock, then we are going to be fine."
Kent State leads the field at even-par, shooting 3-under in round one and 3-over in round two. Pimnipa Panthong of Kent State leads all players at 6-under par after shooting a 67 over the first 18 holes before finishing the day with a 71.
ROUND 3: The final round of the tournament will resume at 10:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in a shotgun start. Carolina will tee off from holes 1-3 with Kent State and BYU.
