Baldwin Merits All-America Honors In 100-Yard Freestyle
March 17, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
First Tar Heel since 2002 to be All-America in 50 and 100 free in same year.
COLUMBUS, OHIO - University of North Carolina senior freestyler Caroline Baldwin finished 10th in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday night at the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the Ohio State University campus.
With her finish, Baldwin became the first Tar Heel to finish with All-America honors in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events since Christy Watkins did so in 2002.
Baldwin had finished eighth in Thursday's 50-yard freestyle. She qualified 14th in Saturday's preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle, going 47.93. She improved significantly in her consolation final swim in the event as she clocked a 47.51 and moved up four spots into 10th place.
"Caroline Baldwin's experience and senior leadership led our efforts at the NCAAs this week," UNC head coach Rich DeSelm. "We are extremely proud of how well Caroline has represented UNC and her team. For four years, she has had a tremendous role every day in practice and in every meet. She is a great competitor and finishes her collegiate career as one of the finest female swimmers in UNC history.
"Today Caroline fought a strong field to secure a lane tonight." DeSelm continued. "In the consolation finals she made a fantastic commitment to go for the win. She swam significantly faster than in the morning and moved up from qualifying 14th to placing 10th."
The Tar Heels finished in 25th place in the team standings with 32 points.
DeSelm was thrilled the other six competitors got significant NCAA experience this week.
"Our other NCAA team members here all return next year and we will count on them, beginning immediately, to help lead the entire team toward greater things next season," DeSelm said. "Every day now they can draw on what they've learned here this week as we move toward the summer and next year. Junior diver Maria Lohman now has three years of NCAA experience and junior swimmer Zhada Fields has two years of NCAA experience and they understand how competitive it is at this level. They will be key leaders next year. Four of our team members at NCAA's are freshmen. Emma Cole, Caroline Hauder, Brooke Perrotta and Maddie Smith leave the meet excited and motivated. Being here this week will impact their careers in an incredibly positive way."
