Crist & McArthur Are Victorious At UCF Black & Gold Challenge
March 17, 2018 | Track & Field
ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of North Carolina track and field teams wrapped up the first meet of the outdoor season Saturday, highlighted by Daniel McArthur winning the men's shot put and Draven Crist winning the men's high jump in the UCF Black & Gold Challenge at the UCF Track and Field Complex.
McArthur, a sophomore from Mooresville, N.C., won the event with his throw of 60-1 ¾ (18.33 meters) on his fifth attempt.Â
After redshirting indoors due to lingering injuries from last year's outdoor season, McArthur completed his strong return to the oval by throwing for a personal-best 179-3 (54.64 meters) in the discus to take third in the event. The throw was over one meter farther than his previous best.
"It was great to have Daniel back in uniform," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "He did a great job for his first meet out - not having competed since the east prelims last year. So, a really good job - lifetime best in the discus and a very good opening mark for the shot put. Daniel is a big part of our team when he is healthy, and he is a good motivator for our team as well."
Crist, a redshirt-sophomore from Burlington, N.C., won the high jump with an outdoor personal-best jump of 6-9 ¾ (2.08 meters). The mark was nearly four inches higher than the second-place finisher.
"Draven became a seven-foot jumper during the indoor season and then was able to score for us at the conference meet," Meaders said. "Our goal for him is to become a more consistent jumper and make seven feet more of an everyday jump for him, and I know that's what he and Coach Hudson are working towards. He got off to a good start this week winning the competition."

• The women's 4x400 squad of Jewel Christian, Katlin Sherman, Cierra Dunston and McKinley McNeill took fourth in 3:43.91.

FRIDAY'S HIGHLIGHT
On the first day of the UCF Black & Gold Challenge, the University of North Carolina's Jill Shippee won the women's weight throw by almost five feet with her throw of 199-6 (60.82 meters) on her first attempt.
Shippee's throw ranks third in UNC history only behind Laura Gerraughty (205-8) and Avana Story (200-9). The freshman from Clifton Park, N.Y. also already ranks third in UNC history in the weight throw.
"I think it was a really good trip for us overall," Meaders said. "Having a chance to get some solid practice in in warm conditions, and with our track being under construction, a chance to get on the big oval was definitely beneficial. A lot of the kids ran in some off distances and did their non-primary events in some of the field events, but overall I am very pleased with the week of training and the competition."
