Tar Heels Drop Series Finale to Pitt

CHAPEL HILL – Despite scoring first, Carolina could not overcome Pittsburgh 12 hits for the series win Sunday, falling 10-2 in six innings at Anderson Stadium.

With her second home run of the weekend, Taylor Wike logged her sixth multi-hit game of the weekend to highlight Carolina's offense. Three Tar Heels each recorded a hit, but it was not enough for the win as Carolina falls to 12-15 overall, 4-2 in the ACC. Pittsburgh's Giorgiana Zeremenko, Alexis Solak and Erin Hershman each logged multi-hit days at the plate as the Panthers improve to 15-11-1 on the season, 4-2 in league play.

Carolina scored in the second and third inning to strike first. Megan Dray laced a leadoff single to center before a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. Brittany West crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Panthers evened it up with a solo shot by Zeremenko in the third to knot the game at one each.

In the third, Wike put the Tar Heels back on top with her second home run of the weekend with a gone-ball to center for a 2-1 edge.

Pitt answered back thanks to a Taylor Meyers grand slam in the fourth. An RBI-single by Solak tacked on one more for a 6-2 advantage. In the sixth, she plated two more on a single down the right line. Myers drove in another run on a bunt single before Kellyn Daly entered the circle to pitch for Carolina who closed the inning with a strikeout.

Kristina Burkhardt and Hailey Jensen each logged a hit against Pitt, but could not come around to score. Brittany Pickett took the loss in 5.1 innings with Daly closing the final two outs. Pitt's Sarah Dawson and Kayla Harris split the innings with Harris earning the win.

The Tar Heels embark on a 10-game road trip beginning with a doubleheader Tuesday at USC-Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
