COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of North Carolina track & field teams will compete at the Weems Baskin Invitational this weekend, hosted by the University of South Carolina from March 23-24 at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track. The meet begins Friday with the field events getting underway at 9 a.m. and the track events beginning at 3 p.m.

The meet will resume on Saturday with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and events on the track at 10 a.m.

The meet will include nearly 50 teams and over 1,500 student-athletes. Teams expected to be in attendance include Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Allen, Anderson, Appalachian State, Ashland, Benedict, Campbell, Carson-Newman, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, The Citadel, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Columbia College, Columbia International, Coppin State, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Florida A&M, Fort Valley State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Hampton, Hartford, Limestone, Livingstone, Monroe College, Morgan State, Newberry, Norfolk State, North Carolina, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, North Greenville, Paine, St. Augustine's, Savannah State, Shorter, South Carolina, South Carolina State, Tennessee State, Tusculum, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, Virginia Tech, Voorhees and Western Carolina.

LAST TIME OUT
Carolina opened the outdoor season last weekend in Orlando, Fla., at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge. The meet mostly consistent of Tar Heels competing in their off events, but several student-athletes had notable performances.

On the first day of the meet, freshman Jill Shippee won the women's weight throw by almost five feet with her throw of 199-6 (60.82 meters) on her first attempt. Shippee's throw ranks third in UNC history only behind Laura Gerraughty (205-8) and Avana Story (200-9).

On Saturday, sophomore Daniel McArthur won the men's shot put and set a new lifetime best in the discus. In the shot, he threw for 60-1 ¾ (18.33 meters) to claim the victory, and in the discus, he threw for 179-3 (54.64 meters) to take third. Redshirt-sophomore Draven Crist also won the men's high jump with an outdoor personal-best 6-9 ¾ (2.08 meters).

IN THE RANKINGS
The season may only be one week old, but the Tar Heels already have 12 of the top-5 best times/marks in the conference. Shippee leads the conference in the women's hammer throw.

Carolina also owns six top-10 times/marks in the east region with Shippee also ranking top in the region in the hammer.
