MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - University of North Carolina freshman men's diver Greg Duncan earned honorable mention All-America honors in three-meter diving Friday at the 2018 NCAA Men's Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Jean Freeman Aquatics Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Duncan, a first year Tar Heel from Oakton, Va., placed ninth in Friday's preliminaries in three-meter diving and then 11th in the consolation final, diving consistently throughout the day. He scored six team points for the Tar Heels who are 33rd in the team standings.
"I couldn't be more proud of Greg Duncan this week," said Tar Heel diving coach Abel Sanchez. "He did a great job today fighting for a position in the three-meter finals and just missed by a few points. He was a little off his rhythm however he was able to find vertical. I know he's upset, however, he has nothing to be ashamed of. He represented the University of North Carolina and the swimming and diving team with grit and honor. The Tar Heel nation should be extremely proud of him, because I know I am."
The two-time individual ACC champion from last month scored 403 points in the three-meter diving preliminaries, placing ninth. He scored 394.4 points to earn 11th place in the event, taking the third spot in the consolation final. Duncan had placed 23rd in one-meter diving on Thursday with 316.70 point. He likely would have made the consolation final were it not for a low score on his second dive, arguably the only dive of 18 the past two days he did not perform on a high level.
Senior co-captain Michael McBryan competed in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday, placing 30th in a time of 53.15 seconds. He will conclude his collegiate career by swimming in the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries on Saturday.
"This was definitely one of the deepest fields of athletes in a contest," said Sanchez of the three-meter event. "It was remarkable that you needed to score 419 points in order to make finals. This has never occurred in NCAA history.I know Gr eg is hungry for more and now we head back to the drawing board and get ready for USA nationals."
