Duncan earns All-America honors as freshman.
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The 2017-18 University of North Carolina swimming and diving seasons came to an end Saturday night at the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships concluded at the Jean Freeman Aquatics Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Senior Michael McBryan, co-captain from Doylestown, Pa., was the only Tar Heel in action on Saturday as he placed 24th in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:55.41.
The Tar Heels finished 36th in the team standings with six team points. Freshman Greg Duncan was the other Tar Heel in the meet as he placed 11th in 3-meter diving Friday and 23rd in 1-meter diving Thursday.
UNC head coach Rich DeSelm had praise for both of his competitors in the meet.
"Michael McBryan has had a stellar career at UNC and we appreciate so many things that he brought to our team. He is one of the toughest and most consistent competitors we've had – a hard worker, a leader and a role model. We appreciate his coach at Central Bucks in Pennsylvania, Stu Kulka, preparing Michael for college and for the support his family has shown throughout his career," said DeSelm.
"Michael has made significant contributions to the team each of his four years at UNC. In addition, he improved every year and, for the first time in his collegiate career, this year he qualified for the NCAA Championships. As he has for four years, Michael represented us well this week in Minneapolis. Assistant coach Sean Quinn and Michael had a great coach-swimmer relationship over the past four years and Sean has had a great deal to do with Michael's progress. All of us feel fortunate to have had Michael at UNC. As is the ultimate goal, Michael will graduate in May and has several job opportunities to select from."

"We are proud of our freshman diver Greg Duncan for advancing to his first men's NCAA swimming and diving championship after a winning ACC Diver of the Meet recognition at the ACC Championships and, then, advancing to NCAAs at the zone meet," said DeSelm. "Coach Abel Sanchez has done a tremendous job preparing Greg this year.
"On one-meter, Greg dove well but missed two entries and, at a meet as competitive as this one, this kept him from making the top 16 and scoring. On three-meter, Greg dove superbly against a great field and finished ninth in the preliminaries and 11th in the consolation final. Greg is one of the hardest workers on our team and one of the toughest competitors. We are excited to see how Greg does this summer and looking forward to his sophomore year."
