GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's third varsity eight has been honored as Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The Tar Heels shared the honor with Boston College's first varsity four.
North Carolina's third varsity eight went undefeated in two days of racing last weekend, winning all four of its races. The Tar Heels beat both Temple and St. Joseph's on Saturday, racing on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. On Sunday, the Tar Heels raced at the Cooper Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J., winning both their heat and the final. UNC beat Navy, Boston College, Bucknell, West Virginia and Drexel in the championship.
The UNC 3V8 lineup for the weekend was freshman coxswain Ashley Lim (Asheville, North Carolina), sophomore stroke Julianne Peters (Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina), senior seven seat Kate Hickert (Huntersville, North Carolina), freshman six seat Katie McMahon (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), senior five seat Maddie Omeltchenko (Port Washington, New York), freshman four seat Muskan Chhina (Asheville, North Carolina), freshman three seat Liz Finnessy (Raleigh, North Carolina), freshman two seat Sarah Velarde (Fayetteville, North Carolina) and freshman bow Lily Brown (St. Louis, Missouri).
BC raced at the same events UNC did. The V4 beat Saint Joseph's and Temple on Saturday and finished second at the Cooper Sprints on Sunday.
Both boats will be in action at this year's ACC Rowing Championships on May 13 at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. The 2018 ACC Rowing Championship preliminaries and finals will be available live on ACC Network Extra.
