Duncan and Sanchez honored by league.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Greg Duncan of Oakton, Va. and Tar Heel diving coach Abel Sanchez were honored with major awards for their accomplishments during the recently completed 2017-18 season from the Atlantic Coast Conference. The awards were announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.
Duncan was named the ACC Male Diver of the Year, the first Tar Heel so honored since Ned Meekins in 1958. At that time, the award was named the John A. Futchenberg Award with Tar Heels sweeping it three straight years (David McInnis in 1956-57 and Meekins in 1958). Sanchez was honored as the ACC Male Diving Coach of the Year, the first time he has won the award. He had won the ACC Female Diving Coach of the Year in 2016.
Duncan had a spectacular first year at Carolina. He won the ACC championships in one-meter and three-meter diving at the conference meet. In the process, he became the first Tar Heel to win the three-meter event since Eric Poitras in 2004, the first UNC diver to win the one-meter event since Joe Craft in 1994 and the first Carolina diver to win both events since Ned Meekins in 1958.
Duncan was the first Tar Heel since Poitras in 2004 to win the most valuable men's diver award at the ACC Championships. Duncan went on to place second in both one-meter and three-meter diving at the 2018 NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
At the NCAA Championships last week, Duncan earned honorable mention All-America honors in three-meter diving with an 11th place finish.
