Tar Heels Win Series, Split Day Two at Virginia
March 31, 2018 | Softball
"We battled and competed in every game this weekend," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "I could go through the entire lineup because everyone did some great things for us this weekend either at the plate or defensively. We didn't make good adjustments at the end, but we were in every game and every inning this weekend. As a whole for the weekend, we competed hard. We've been on the road for nine games now and have only lost twice. We're road warriors but we're looking forward to getting back home next week."
With the third ACC series win of the season, the Tar Heels improve to 8-4 in league play, 19-17 overall. Virginia now sits at 11-24, 2-10 in the ACC.
North Carolina 11, Virginia 7 (8 innings)
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers battled through four lead changes and two tie games before Carolina's four-run eighth inning clinched the 11-7 win in game one.
Megan Dray led Carolina's offense, going 4-for-5 with five RBI. Leah Murray drove in three runs on two hits while Taylor Wike, Berlynne Delamora and Kiani Ramsey also logged two hits at the plate. Between the five multi-hit games, Carolina totaled 14 while Virginia logged nine. Brittany Pickett tossed her 17th win and 18th complete game in the circle.
In the first inning, Virginia struck first and took a two-run lead on a pair of solo home runs by Hayley Busby and Danni Ingraham.
Katie Bailiff's leadoff single set the stage for Carolina's four-run inning in the fourth. Ramsey drove in the Tar Heels' first run on an RBI-single through the left side. Dray followed suit with a shallow ball to center, knotting the game at 2-2. Murray plated the go ahead run on a two-run single to center, giving Carolina a 4-2 edge.
The Cavaliers answered back in the fourth on a three-run double to the left-center warning track, reclaiming the lead, 5-4.
Carolina responded in the sixth, plating two runs for a 6-5 advantage. A trio of singles put runners on for the Tar Heels as Murray and Kristina Burkhardt drove in the two runs.
However, Virginia quickly evened up the game on Emily Osherow's solo-shot to lead off the sixth.
Dray came in clutch for the Tar Heel, lacing a single through the left side for a 7-6 lead.
Mirroring the sixth inning, an RBI-single off the bat of Olivia Gott knotted the game a 7-7 to send the game into extras.
Wike led off the eighth inning with a single up the middle followed by a stolen base. Delamora's second single of the game scored the go-ahead run before Dray cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right to solidify the win.
Virginia 10, Carolina 5
Carolina's early lead was not enough to sweep Virginia on Saturday afternoon as the Cavaliers took the series finale, 10-5.
Destiny DeBerry was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with her first triple of the season. Wike logged two hits as well while Burkhardt drove in two runs for the Tar Heels. Despite 11 hits for Carolina, the Cavaliers came out on top due to a trio of home runs.
The Tar Heels continued in game two, taking a two-run lead in the first inning. Murray led off with a single before Burkhardt's second sac-fly of the day scored the run. Delamora doubled to left-center for the second Carolina run.
Virginia answered back in the bottom of the frame, plating four runs on two hits. A wild pitch and sac-fly tied up the game before Gott homered for a two-run lead.
In the fourth, DeBerry led off with a triple to right before Katelyn Shifflett doubled to shallow center, cutting the score to 6-3. RBI-singles from Wike and Burkhardt made it 6-5 before a strikeout ended the inning. The Carolina defense turned a double play in the bottom of the frame as Kellyn Daly went back to Wike who threw over to Campbell Hutcherson to end the inning.
Virginia added insurance to its lead on a two-run gone-ball by Lacey Smith in the fifth inning. The Cavaliers' third home run of the game made it a 10-5 game in the sixth to clinch the decision.
The Tar Heels' starter Hannah Todd took the loss. Katie Grace Olinger threw 1.1 innings while Daily closed out the game, tossing 4.2 innings.
The Tar Heels conclude their 10-game road trip at UNCW Tuesday at 5 p.m.
