Maye & Berry Named First-Team All-ACC, Maye Most Improved
March 4, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina junior forward Luke Maye and senior guard Joel Berry II are two of five players named to the 2018 All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team. In addition, Maye was named the league's Most Improved Player in a vote by the league's head coaches, member schools' radio broadcasters and a select media panel.
Berry was a second-team All-ACC selection a year ago.
This is the first time since 2012 Carolina placed multiple players on the All-ACC first team. That year, three Tar Heels – Tyler Zeller, Harrison Barnes and John Henson – made the first team.
Berry and Maye, the first Tar Heels to both average 17 points in a season since Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins in 1984, are Carolina's 76th and 77th first-team All-ACC selections, eight more than any other school in league history.
Maye, a finalist for the John R. Wooden National Player of the Year award, is averaging 17.7 points and 10.1 rebounds. He has 15 double-doubles, is tied for first in the ACC in field goals (223), and is second in rebounding, fifth in scoring and seventh in field goal percentage (.511).
Maye started one game his first two seasons and averaged 5.5 points as a sophomore. His scoring average increase of 12.2 points this year is the largest in the league and is on pace to be the largest in Carolina Basketball history. He has scored more than 30 points three times and has the fifth-most double-doubles in the Roy Williams era.
Berry, a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award as the top point guard in the country, leads UNC in scoring at 17.8 points per game, in three-pointers with 79 and free throw percentage (.876). He is second in the ACC in free throw percentage, third in three-pointers per game and fourth in scoring. Berry, the 2016 ACC Tournament MVP and 2017 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, has scored the game-winning points in three ACC games this season.
This is the 23rd season in which two or more Tar Heels made the All-ACC first team: 1957-58-59-60-63-67-68-69-72-76-77-78-82-83-84-87-93-95-98-2005-09-12-18.
Maye and Berry received the third- and fourth-most votes for All-ACC honors behind only ACC Player of the Marvin Bagley III (Duke) and Jerome Robinson (Boston College), who leads the ACC in scoring heading into the ACC Tournament.
