Tar Heels Top Harvard in Carolina Classic Finale
March 4, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – With home runs off the bats of Kristina Burkhardt and Hailey Jensen, North Carolina defeated Harvard, 6-1, to wrap up the Carolina Classic Sunday at Anderson Stadium. Limiting Harvard to three hits, Brittany Pickett threw her ninth complete game of the season while the Tar Heels improve to 7-13.
"I'm very proud of how we finished today after some tough games this weekend," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Brittany did an outstanding job today. She had great command of her pitches. I am excited for our offense. We did a good job putting hits together. Hailey Jensen had her first career home run. Kristina had a day at the plate and also made some great plays defensively."
Burkhardt led the Tar Heels, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs while also logging five putouts in right field. Jensen capitalized on her role as the designated player with a pair of hits and two runs, including her first career home run. Additionally, Hailey Cole scored two on an RBI-single while Campbell Hutcherson plated a final run for Carolina.
"We played collectively as a team for a total team win today," Papa said. "It's always a great feeling to finish the weekend like that heading into a big week at Charlotte then versus Duke."
Carolina struck in the first inning on a RBI-single by Burkhardt. With the bases loaded, Hutcherson drew a four-pitch walk to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 edge to begin the game.
In the third, Burkhardt launched a home run for her second hit of the day to give Carolina a 3-0 lead. A two-run single by Cole in the fifth inning made it a five-run game for the Tar Heels. Jensen capped off Carolina's scoring with her first career gone-ball in the sixth for a 6-0 lead.
Holding Harvard at three hits, the Crimson rounded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, scoring an unearned run after Alexa Altchek's single and a Carolina miscue. However, Pickett's second strikeout and a groundout secured the 6-1 decision. Harvard now sits at 3-6 on the season.
Pickett went the distance for the win, improving her season ERA to 1.84. The Crimson starter Alissa Hiener look the loss in 0.2 innings with Olivia Giaquinto and Kathleen Duncan tossing 3.1 and 3.0 innings in relief, respectively.
The Tar Heels travel to Charlotte for a midweek matchup in the Queen City at 5 p.m. before returning home to host Duke March 9-11 to begin ACC play.
