Carolina Walks Off Against Duke, 2-1
March 9, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The inaugural meeting between Duke and Carolina lived up to the rivalry. The ACC foes pushed the game to nine innings before Kiani Ramsey came around to score and secure the 2-1 victory on Friday night. Following the game, junior outfielder Destiny DeBerry got engaged on the field to cap off the win.
With the score tied at one after nine innings, Ramsey set the stage for the walk-off with a leadoff triple to left field. With one out, Katelyn Shifflett sent the ball to left for a sac-fly and the RBI for Carolina's 1-0 start to ACC play.
After the Tar Heels shook hands and circled for the Alma Mater, DeBerry's now fiancé, Connor Smith, entered the field from the first base dugout. With her team surrounding her and family in the stands, DeBerry said yes to Smith.
Striking out four, Brittany Pickett went the distance in the circle for her eighth win of the year. Both Leah Murray and Hailey Jensen logged two hits on the day to lead Carolina's offense. Carolina improves to 9-13 on the season while Duke falls to 12-7, 0-1 in the ACC.
Both the Tar Heels and Blue Devils were held scoreless thanks to solid defense in the field. Logging five putouts at shortstop, Taylor Wike snagged a line-drive in the third frame to hold off the Blue Devils. Both Hailey Cole and Pickett assisted five outs to limit Duke to six hits.
In the fifth inning, the Blue Devils took the lead off a home run by Hannah Pridemore. However, the Tar Heels evened up the score in the sixth at 1-1. Jensen sent her second hit of the day to the right field warning track. Berlynne Delamora knocked the ball to third, reached on an error and allowed Micaela Abbatine to come around to score.
Heading into extra innings, a double play in the eighth from Pickett to Wike to Campbell Hutcherson at first kept the Blue Devils at bay.
With Ramsey leading off the ninth inning, the junior laced the ball back to the warning track for a her second triple in as many games. On the second pitch, Shifflett plated the winning run on a sac-fly for the 2-1 win with Duke's Amelia Wiercioch taking the loss.
