Alowonle Qualifies For 400-Meter Hurdles Final At Commonwealth Games

CARRARA, AUSTRALIA - Former standout student-athlete on the University of North Carolina track and field team, RJ Alowonle, qualified for the final of the 400-meter hurdles at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after running a lifetime best of 49.49 in the qualifying round Tuesday. Alowonle, representing Nigeria at Gold Coast 2018, will run in the event final at 5:45 a.m. ET (7:45 p.m. local time) on Thursday.

At Carolina, Alowonle was a three-time All-America selection in the 400 hurdles - earning first-team honors as a sophomore and twice earning honorable-mention recognition. He was also a two-time ACC champion in the event and holds the fifth-fastest 400-hurdles time in school history at 50.02.
Across all of his events - 400-meter hurdles, 4x400 and 400 meters - Alowonle was recognized with All-America honors (first-team, second-team or honorable mention) six times, he was a five-time ACC champion and was an 11-time All-ACC performer during his five years.
Alowonle was also a standout in the classroom, earning Academic All-ACC honors and USTFCCCA Academic honors throughout his time at Carolina. As he completed his Tar Heel career, the senior Alowonle was named a third-team Academic All-America by CoSIDA, becoming the first student-athlete from the men's track and field program to earn Academic All-America honors since 1988.
