Carolina Blanks Wolfpack for Series Win
April 16, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – The Tar Heels set the tone early, scoring six runs in the first two innings en route to a 8-0 shutout victory over NC State for the series win on Monday evening.
Brittany Pickett not only pitched her second complete-game shutout of the series, but also went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and the game-winning RBI-single in the sixth to tie a single-game career high. Taylor Wike was perfect with four hits to set a new single-game career high, while also driving in a pair of runs. Leah Murray, Kiani Ramsey and Katelyn Shifflett had two hits apiece in Carolina's 13-hit day – the fourth most hits in a single game this season.
Defensively, Carolina turned two double plays in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by Destiny DeBerry's diving catch and accurate throw to first. Pickett limited the Wolfpack to four hits, striking out two in the game for her 23rd win of the season. With two shutouts over NC State, Pickett is the first Tar Heel to throw two complete-game shutouts in the same ACC series since Lori Spingola's two against Florida State in 2011.
With the victory, Carolina maintains its top spot in the ACC Coastal division with a 13-5 mark, 25-21 overall. The Wolfpack falls to 22-21 and 5-12 in league play.
Carolina quickly took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the first. A trio of singles set the stage for Brittany Pickett's third home run of the season, giving Carolina a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
A single by Shifflett and Murray's walk put Carolina in scoring position in the second. Ramsey sent a two-run double to the left field warning track before Wike plated one on a single through the right side.
In the fourth, DeBerry and Murray connected for a double play. DeBerry laid out and made the diving catch in left and threw over to first as Murray caught the runner tagging up.
Carolina followed up in the fourth by turning its second double play of the game, this time by Megan Dray, Sierra Parkinson and Murray.
The Tar Heels clinched the win in the sixth inning on a trio of hits. Murray doubled to third and was brought home on Wike's third triple of the year. Pickett laced her second hit of day through the right side for the RBI-single and the 8-0 win in six innings.
NC State's Sam Russ went 2-for-2 on the day while two others also recorded hits, but Pickett's lights-out performance in the circle and at the plate secured the Carolina victory. NCSU's Kama Woodall took the loss in 1.2 innings.
The Tar Heels remain home for a Wednesday matchup against ECU at 5 p.m.
