Carolina Outlasts ECU, 4-3

CHAPEL HILL – With every Carolina batter recording a hit, the Tar Heels defeated ECU, 4-3, Wednesday evening, thanks to Brittany Pickett's go-ahead home run in the sixth inning.
Not only did Pickett go the distance in the circle, she sent her fourth home run of the season to center in the sixth inning, securing Carolina's 4-3 win to improve to 26-21 on the season. Leah Murray and Megan Dray logged two hits while Destiny DeBerry scored two runs to lead the Tar Heels' offense. For the Pirates, Tyler King's two-run double was not enough, as ECU falls to 19-25 on the season.
Pickett dominated in the circle from the start, throwing 13 strikes in the first two innings and striking out five on the day. Dray turned an double play with Murray after on a popup in the third to hold off the Pirates through three.
DeBerry and Murray each singled in the third, setting up for the double steal. As Murray went for second, DeBerry crossed the plate for Carolina's 1-0 lead.
The Pirates evened up the score on a solo-shot by Tate McClellan in the fourth before taking the lead on a two-run double by Tyler King in the fifth.
Carolina answered back in the bottom of the frame, knotting the game at 3-3. Dray and Katelyn Shifflett each singled to start before a fielder's choice for the first out. Murray singled to center before for an RBI before a pair of ECU errors allowed the tying run to come home.
Leading off the sixth, Pickett slugged her second home run in as many games to finalize the score at 4-3.
Tossing her 25th complete game, Pickett improves to 24-8 on the season. The Pirates' Erin Poepping took the loss in 1.2 innings.
Carolina hits the road to Georgia Tech for a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Atlanta.
