Greene Named Scholar-Athlete Of the Year, Leads Five Tar Heels Honored

UNC junior Nicole Greene has added another honor to an already outstanding year, earning the title of 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The award was announced Thursday by the ACC and goes to the junior or senior student-athlete deemed most outstanding academically and athletically.

"We are excited for Nicole to be the recipient of this particular award," head coach Harlis Meaders said. "It is a combination of athletic and academic excellence. It is what we strive for, for all of our men's and women's track and field student-athletes here at UNC. It has been a wonderful season for Nicole athletically and now the rest of the community can celebrate with her as she receives this academic award. I couldn't be prouder. I'm extremely happy for both her and her family."

Virginia Tech's Vincent Ciattei, also an NCAA Champion in 2018, is the recipient of the men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Greene was joined on the All-ACC Academic Team by four other Tar Heels: seniors Alex Cooke and Kenny Selmon, junior Darryl Shaw and freshman Isaiah Palmer.

Cooke is a psychology major from Lowgap, N.C.

Greene is an exercise and sport science major from Ponte Vedra, Fla.

Palmer is from Plano, Texas, and is majoring in business administration.

Selmon is from Mableton, Ga., and is majoring in business administration.

Shaw is from Fayetteville, N.C., and is majoring in media and journalism.

Greene won the ACC's only women's national title at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships when she prevailed in the highly-competitive high jump on March 9.

After achieving personal bests of 6-2 (1.88m) three times during the indoor season, Greene nearly reached that height again with her effort of 6-1 ¾ (1.87m) at the NCAA finals. That earned the Tar Heel junior a spot in a championship jump off, which went an unprecedented seven rounds before Greene emerged as the gold medalist and became the program's first national champion since 2007.

The NCAA title followed Greene's gold medal at the ACC Championships, where she matched her career-best mark and just missed on an attempt to clear what would have been an ACC-record 6-3.25 (1.91m). She was named the ACC Women's Indoor Field Performer of the Year by the conference at the conclusion of the season.

Greene is a three-time Dean's List student and serves as a women's track and field representative on UNC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council. She has been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, the All-ACC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Academic Teams, and the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

A 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Semifinalist, Greene is on a pre-med track and recently gained admission to the UNC School of Medicine's Medical Education Development (MED) Program. She is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society.

"This honor means a lot because I never want to make one side less than the other," Greene said. "I never want to ruin my chances in academics for athletics, and vice versa. Being able to get ACC Indoor Performer of the Year and to get this shows that I can balance both. I don't have to hinder one or the other."

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

Every member of the 2017-18 All-ACC Indoor Track and Field Academic Teams also earned All-America and/or All-ACC honors during the most recent season.
