Henkels And Litynski Earn All-ACC Academic Honors

Two Tar Heel fencers have earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic honors, as announced Friday by the league. Jackie Litynski and Jacob Henkels, both sophomores, earned the recognition, which is based on athletic and academic achievement during the 2017-18 season.

Litynski, a public policy and environmental science major from Niskayuna, N.Y., had both deciding wins as the Tar Heels beat Duke and Notre Dame in a fence-off to win the ACC Women's Championship, the first in program history. She finished the year with an 85-25 record and was seeded fifth in the region, the highest for UNC, heading into NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals.

She earned All-ACC Academic honors for the second time.

Henkels, a public policy and economics major from Cleveland, Ohio, made the men's epee final round (top 12) at NCAA Regionals and finished 12th overall. He tied for the UNC men's team's best performance of the day.

Notre Dame's Amanda Sirico, who won the ACC title in epee and finished third at NCAA Championships, was the ACC Women's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Notre Dame's Jonah Shainberg won the men's honor. He was the ACC men's champion in sabre and finished fifth at the NCAA Championship.
