Tar Heels Sixth With 18 Holes to Play
University of North Carolina seniors Jose Montaño shot a 4-under-par 68 and Ben Griffin notched a 69 to remain among the leaders in the second round of the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship Saturday at the Old North State Club.
The Tar Heels shot an 8-under-280, three strokes better than they did in Friday's opening round, but remain in sixth place in the team standings. UNC is 13 under par (563), a stroke behind Duke and Virginia. Georgia Tech leads at 553 with Clemson and Notre Dame tied for second, six strokes behind the Yellow Jackets at 559.
Montaño shot the Tar Heels' low round of the day with five birdies and only one bogey. The senior from Bolivia shot 4-under-par on the back nine and is tied for 16th.
Griffin (Chapel Hill) made six birdies for the second day in a row, but had three bogeys today to finish 3 under for the day. He is tied for third place in the tournament at 8 under. Virginia's Thomas Walsh shot 65 today and leads the field at 12-under-par. His Cavalier teammate Danny Walker is two shots behind at -10 and Griffin is tied at -8 with Clemson's Doc Redman and Louisville's Nicolas Platret.
Griffin leads the field at 7-under-par on the par 5s and his dozen birdies are tied for the second most in the tournament. Overall, Carolina has played the par 5s in 17 under, lower than any other team.
Tar Heel freshman Ryan Gerard (Raleigh) shot 71 for the second time in as many days, sophomore Austin Hitt (Longwood, Fla.) lowered his score from 75 to 72, and senior William Register (Burlington) posted his second straight 73.
Register made 15 pars for the second consecutive round and leads the entire field with 30 pars over the first 36 holes.
Final round action is Sunday.
