Tar Heels Fall Short in Doubleheader at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – Carolina led from the start in each game of Saturday's twin bill, but the Tar Heels were unable to come away with a win, dropping the series to Georgia Tech, 2-1.
The Tar Heels logged 16 hits on the day, including home runs by Taylor Wike and Brittany Pickett in game two to highlight Carolina's offense. However, the Tar Heels could not capitalize against Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech 5, North Carolina 2
The Tar Heels led Georgia Tech, 2-1, until the fifth inning, but Carolina was unable to hold on to the lead, falling 5-2 in game one Saturday.
Leah Murray led Carolina in game one with a pair of hits and two stolen bases while Wike drove in both runs in the setback. Georgia Tech's Draven Sonnon and Crosby Huckabay each plated two en route to the 5-2 decision.
Destiny DeBerry and Kiani Ramsey each singled in the third. With two outs, Wike sent the ball to right, driving in two for the 2-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets answered back with Draven Sonnon's ninth home run of the season, but solid defense left two on. Georgia Tech took the lead scoring three with two outs on the board in the fifth on an RBI-single and two-run triple by Rebecca Prairie.
Georgia Tech finalized the game on Sonnon's RBI-triple to right for the 5-2 lead.
Pickett took the loss, striking out five in her 27th complete game while Emily Anderson picked up the win in game one.
Georgia Tech 6, North Carolina 5
Carolina outhit Georgia Tech in the series finale, however the Yellow Jackets capitalized on eight walks to come away with the 6-5 win to take the series on Saturday afternoon.
Wike and Sierra Parkinson led Carolina's offense in the finale, each with two hits, while Wike also crossed the plate twice. Krzus did the same for the Yellow Jackets, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
Carolina jumped on the board, scoring three runs in the first inning. Ramsey doubled to left-centber before scoring on a Georgia Tech miscue. Wike singled and stole second before Kristina Burkhardt and Sierra Parkinson each drove in a run on an RBI-single up the middle for the 3-0 lead.
Georgia Tech answered back with two runs off the bats of Crosby Huckabay and Lilly Hooper before knotting the game on an RBI-walk for Cameron Stanford in the second.
However, the Tar Heels quickly reclaimed the lead via back-to-back solo home runs by Wike and Pickett in the third for a 5-3 edge. Carolina then posted a 1-2-3 inning on defense to hold off the Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech answered back with a two-run triple by Prairie in the fourth inning before taking the lead off Krzus' bat in the fifth.
Carolina threatened in the sixth as Parkinson led off with a double, but it wasn't enough as the Tar Heels dropped game two.
Hannah Nommensen took the loss in 4.1 innings, striking out two. Pickett closed the remaining 1.2 innings while Tech's Anderson earned her second win of the day in 2.2 innings.
The Tar Heels return to action 6 p.m. Wednesday for a single game at Liberty.
