Tar Heels In 11th After Round One Of The ACC Championships
April 21, 2018 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team completed round one of the ACC Championship in 11th at 18-over-par 306 Saturday at the Grandover Resort East Course.
The Tar Heels were able to get two strokes back on No. 18 thanks to a birdie by senior Bryana Nguyen and an eagle by freshman Ava Bergner, sending Carolina into Sunday's second round with some momentum after struggling through most of the first round. Bergner's eagle was one of two eagles for the Tar Heels on the day, as sophomore Brynn Walker also nailed oen on No. 6.
"The front nine if very tight, very demanding, but I saw some poor ball striking for our team on that front nine, and it cost us," head coach Jan Mann said. "They didn't look like they were playing real tight, but obviously the scores would indicate otherwise.
Walker and junior Kelly Whaley are out front for Tar Heels after the first 18 holes of the conference championship. Both shot 76 on the day and are in a tie for 30th.
Nguyen finished the day with that birdie on 18, but shot a 77 for the round and is in a tie for 39th. Sophomore Mariana Ocano also shot a 77 after making birdie on two of her last three holes. Bergner finished the day with an 80 and in a tie for 53rd.
"I told them today, 'Hopefully we can rebound and see ourselves a lot more confident, playing a lot better and playing like we know we can tomorrow,'" Mann said.
Duke is atop the leaderboard at 6-under par 282 through round one, and the Blue Devils' star senior Leona Maguire leads the field of players after firing a 67 Friday.
ROUND 2: Round 2 of the ACC Championship will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday. Carolina will tee off from hole 10 with Boston College and N.C.
