Griffin First Tar Heel to Shoot in the 60s Three Times at ACCs
April 22, 2018 | Men's Golf
Register Shoots 67 for Low Final Round
University of North Carolina seniors William Register and Ben Griffin shot 67 and 69, respectively, in the final round of the 2018 ACC Championship Sunday at the Old North State Club.
Â
Griffin shot 67-69-69–205 for the tournament and became the first Tar Heel to ever shoot three rounds in the 60s in an ACC Men's Golf Championship. The Chapel Hill native tied school records for ACC Championship play by shooting 11-under 205 for the tournament. Dustin Bray also shot 11-under 205 in 2002. Those are the lowest 54-hole scores and scores to par in UNC history in the ACC Championship.
Â
Register made seven birdies en route to his 5-under 67. He finished the tournament at 3-under-213, tied for 24th place.
Â
Georgia Tech won the team title at 29 under par. Virginia's Thomas Walsh was the medalist, setting an ACC Championship record at -16.
Â
Carolina finished sixth at 19-under-845. The Tar Heels were in sixth place after all three rounds.
Â
Senior Jose Montaño shot an even-par 72 for the Tar Heels on Sunday and 4-under-212 for the tournament to finish tied for 21st. Sophomore Austin Hitt was 2 over Sunday and 3 over for the tournament and freshman Ryan Gerard shot 77 Sunday after a pair of 71s in the first two rounds.
Â
"There were bright spots along the way, but overall it was an average week for us as a group," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto.
Â
"Ben had another good week and continues to leave his mark on the program as the first Tar Heel to shoot three rounds in the 60s and tie Dustin Bray's 54-hole ACC score.
Â
"Jose was consistent and shot even par or better in all 3 rounds. It was also great to see Will play well today. He's felt good about his game for awhile now and it was nice to see him post 67.
Â
"Our guys will now prepare for final exams and continue to work on their games. It's the best time of year and we look forward to NCAA Regionals in a few weeks."
