Seniors Lead #1 UNC Past Pitt, 6-1
April 22, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina honored its three seniors on Sunday before their final regular season women's tennis match of the season. The top-ranked Tar Heels were led by that trio in a 6-1 victory over Pitt from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The doubles tandem of seniors Maggie Kane and Cassandra Vazquez clinched the doubles point, and later in the afternoon classmate Marika Akkerman won the deciding singles match to secure the win over the Pirates.
The most successful four-year stretch in program history continues into the ACC Championship next week in Cary, North Carolina. UNC tied for second in the league's standings with Georgia Tech at 12-2, but will be the No. 3 seed by virtue of its loss earlier this season to the Yellow Jackets.
Duke (13-1) is the top seed, while Miami (11-3) is fourth. All four teams receive double byes in the tournament and will all begin play on Friday morning at the Cary Tennis Center.
Sophomore No. 11 Makenna Jones won in straight sets on court one, becoming the first UNC player to post a 14-0 record against the ACC since Jamie Loeb in her spectacular freshman season of 2013-14 when she was named the national player of the year.
No. 83 Alexa Graham bounced back from her first loss of the season on Friday with another quick victory on court three. She is 13-1 against the conference this spring.
No. 24 Alle Sanford also won both her sets on court two to follow right behind Graham. Akkerman won on court six and gave an emphatic fist pump to make it 4-0 Tar Heels.
No. 117 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer was victorious on court five.
