Bassil Named ACC Defensive Player Of The Week
April 23, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
Junior goalkeeper made career high 14 saves versus Notre Dame
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Alex Bassil, a junior goalkeeper from Durham, N.C., has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 16-22, 2018. The University of North Carolina netminder made a career high 14 saves as the unranked Tar Heels defeated 14th-ranked Notre Dame 10-9 at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, April 21, allowing the Tar Heels to end their season at 7-7 and halt a seven-game losing streak in the process.
After starting the year as UNC's fourth string goalie, Alex Bassil started his fifth straight game Saturday after injuries and other issues depleted the UNC goalie corps over the course of the first half of the season. Bassil, who had had 10 saves on three occasions against Maryland, Virginia and Syracuse earlier in the year, turned in his career best performance to date in making 14 saves including a game-saving one with 10 seconds remaining. Notre Dame outshot UNC 41-30 but Bassil kept the Fighting Irish at bay throughout. In the second half, the Fighting Irish outshot Carolina 25-14, but Bassil allowed two goals and made five saves in the third quarter and four saves while allowing three goals in the fourth period.
With UNC leading 10-9, he made an acrobatic kick save on a shot by Bryan Costabile with 10 seconds left to preserve UNC's win and send 13 seniors out winners on Senior Day in the final match of the 2018 season for UNC.
