Tar Heels Finish Tied For Eighth At ACC Championship
April 23, 2018 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team battled gusty winds and rain on the final day of the ACC Championship to shoot 13-over par for the round and finish in a tie for eighth with N.C. State at 31-over-par 895 at the Grandover Resort East Course Monday.
The Tar Heels were all over the board in the final round, firing 10 birdies but also shooting 5 double or triple bogeys on the day. The round was a microcosm of the tournament for Carolina, as the team found success on several holes but seemed to break down on others. The team led the field in eagles with four, but also had 14 double or triple bogeys across the weekend.
"It is certainly not what I expected and not what I had hoped for," head coach Jan Mann said. "Going into this tournament having finished well in the last two tournaments, I had every expectation that we would do well. We didn't put any pressure on the girls, and I don't think they put pressure on themselves. It's obvious that they can play. It's obvious that they can play with anyone, but we've got to tighten up the misses and we can't allow ourselves to self-destruct."
Sophomore Mariana Ocano finished highest on the leaderboard for Carolina in her first ACC Championship after her 67 in round two. She was able to maintain that position despite shooting a 79 in the final round, and she finished the tournament in a tie for 23rd at 7-over-par 223.
"It would have been nice to have been able to see Mariana finish strong," Mann said. "And the more she is in the position where she has had a good round and then getting another under her belt, I think it will happen."
Freshman Ava Bergner turned in her best round of the Championship Monday to lead Carolina on the final day of competition, shooting a 74 to finish in a tie for 44th at 14-over par.
Junior Kelly Whaley and sophomore Bryana Nguyen both shot 75s in round three. Whaley wraps up her third-career ACC Championship in a tie for 25th at 8-over par. Nguyen finished her fourth ACC Championship in a tie for 37th at 12-over par.
Sophomore Brynn Walker shot a 77 Monday and wraps up her second ACC Championship in a tie for 30th at 9-over par.
"You can't have double bogeys and expect to do well, but we will work on it," Mann said. "They are a great team. They are a great bunch of girls. We will see if we can get things in order for regionals."
Duke won the team title by 27 strokes over second-place Florida State, finished the tournament at 15-under par for its 21st title in program history. Duke's Leona Maguire won her third individual title at the Championship following a three-hole playoff with teammate Jaravee Boonchant. She shot a 73 on Monday, but finished at 6-under for the tournament
