UNC To Defend ACC Titles As The No. 3 Seed
April 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis
The North Carolina women's tennis team will defend its back-to-back ACC Championship titles as the No. 3 seed for the 2018 edition that will take place April 25-29 at Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
The Tar Heels earned a double-bye into the quarterfinals and will open up play on Friday at 11:30 a.m. against either sixth seed Virginia or the winner of the first round match between 11th seed Wake Forest and 14th seed Notre Dame.Â
This season marks the first time since 2009 that Carolina will not be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the ACC Championship. Last year, the top seeded Tar Heels defeated Georgia Tech, 4-3, to bring home the eighth title in program history and the third under the direction of head coach Brian Kalbas.Â
A victory Sunday in the title match by UNC would mark the first ACC program to win three straight titles since Georgia Tech turned the trick from 2005-07.
Duke snaps Carolina's five-year stranglehold as the top seed in the tournament. For the first time since 2012, the Blue Devils will begin their quest for an ACC Championship as the No. 1 seed, and will take on the winner of Thursday's second-round match between No. 8 NC State and No. 9 Clemson.
Wednesday's first-round action will start off with No. 12 Louisville facing No. 13 Virginia Tech at 9 a.m., No. 10 Boston College matching up against No. 15 Pitt at 9 a.m., and No. 11 Wake Forest taking on No. 14 Notre Dame in an 11:30 a.m. match.
The NC State/Clemson second-round match opens the slate on Thursday at 9 a.m, along with No. 5 Florida State awaiting the winner of Louisville/Virginia Tech. No. 6 Virginia will take on the winner of Wake Forest/Notre Dame, and No. 7 Syracuse will face the winner of Boston College/Pitt in a pair of 11:30 a.m. matches.
Teams receiving double-byes to Friday's quarterfinal round along with Carolina and Duke include No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 4 Miami.
Shawn Kenney returns to handle play-by-play of the ACC Tennis Championships, with live coverage set from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the tournament's final two days – Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. Former Duke tennis standout and ESPN anchor Prim Siripipat will also be on hand at Cary Tennis Park to work as analyst for the tournament. Melanie Newman is back for her second year as sideline reporter.
