Jones Selected ACC Player Of The Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's Makenna Jones and Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy have been named ACC Women's Tennis Co-Players of the Week, and Duke's Kelly Chen has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
Jones shined for North Carolina in a 6-1 win against Pitt and a tough 5-2 road loss to No. 4 Duke. The sophomore from Greenville, South Carolina, went 2-0 in singles, taking down Duke's fourth-ranked Samantha Harris (7-6, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), and Pitt's Gabriela Rezende (6-1, 6-4), finishing a perfect 14-0 in ACC singles play. In doubles, Jones teamed up with Marika Akkerman to defeat Duke's Hannah Zhao and Meible Chi (6-4), then Jones paired up with Alle Sanford for a win over Pitt's Natsumi Okamoto and Luisa Varon (6-2).
McCarthy turned in an impressive performance for the Blue Devils in wins over top-ranked North Carolina (5-2) and Virginia Tech (7-0). The junior from Cary, North Carolina, defeated the Tar Heels' 83rd-ranked Alexa Graham (6-4, 2-6, 6-4), and the Hokies' Nika Kozar (6-2, 6-4) at No. 3 singles. McCarthy paired up with teammate Ellyse Hamlin in doubles to take down Virginia Tech's duo of Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna, 6-0.
Chen had an impressive week for the Blue Devils, winning both of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches. The rookie from Cerritos, California, earned wins over North Carolina's 82nd-ranked Jessie Aney (6-0, 6-3), and Virginia Tech's Katherine Butler (6-0, 7-6 (8-6)) at No. 4 singles. In doubles play, Chen partnered with Harris for victories over North Carolina's 23rd-ranked duo of Sanford and Sara Daavettila (6-3), and Virginia Tech's pair of Nina Sorkin and Nika Kozar (7-5).
