Tar Heels Cruise Past Cardinals 6-1
April 6, 2018 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The sixth-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team took down No. 40 Louisville 6-1 on a rainy Friday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 15-4 (6-1 ACC) on the year.
Carolina jumped out to a quick lead, claiming the doubles point with wins from Blaine Boyden and Benjamin Sigouin (6-2 on Court 2) then from win William Blumberg and Robert Kelly (7-5 on Court 1).
"I thought we came out strong today in doubles," Kelly said. "We got the doubles point which has been a focus for us in practice this week."
It was more of the same in the singles, as the Tar Heels won their first three matches to secure the victory early.
Freshman Mac Kiger wasted no time and won the first match of the day, 6-4, 6-1 over Clement Filho on Court 5.
After dropping the first two games, Blumberg, ranked No. 2 in the nation, came storming back and took care of business against No. 61 Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff, winning 6-3, 6-4 on Court 1.
Kelly secured the victory for the Heels in a fiery matchup with Federico Gomez on Court 3. Both players brought a high intensity attitude to the match and held it throughout. Ultimately, Kelly took the match 6-4, 6-4.
Throughout the first part of singles, play was suspended twice due to rain. Although play nearly moved inside, the rain quickly subsided each time and never delayed play for much longer than five minutes.
Boyden and Sigouin rounded out the scoring on the day for the Tar Heels, both winning their respective matches. After Sigouin dropped the first set 6-0 on Court 2, he turned it on and won the next two sets, both in tiebreakers, the second 7-6(4), and the third in a 10-point tiebreak, 10-5. Boyden won in straight sets on Court 4, 7-5 and 6-2.
"We came in and executed well today," Kelly said. "It felt pretty good."
The Heels return to action this Sunday at noon, as they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on the Boston College Eagles.
