Clutch Hitting Propels Carolina over Hokies in Doubleheader Sweep

CHAPEL HILL – Despite Virginia Tech scoring first in both games, Carolina swept the doubleheader for a pair of comeback wins, scoring 12 runs on Friday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
Trailing in the sixth inning, Sierra Parkinson drove in the game-winning run for the 2-1 victory in game one. The Tar Heels' offense exploded in game two for the 10-2 victory in five innings, thanks to Kiani Ramsey's first career home run and first Carolina grand slam of the season. Brittany Pickett anchored Carolina's defense, tossing two complete games with 10 strikeouts in the doubleheader. After the first day of the series, Carolina improves to 21-19 overall, 10-4 in ACC play while Virginia Tech falls to 15-22, 2-11 in the conference.
Carolina 2, Virginia Tech 1
Despite an early lead for the Hokies, Carolina fought back for a 2-1 come-from-behind win in game one of the doubleheader.
Parkinson lead the Tar Heels' offense, going 2-for-2 with the game-winning RBI. Pickett went the distance striking out seven while only giving up three hits.
Virginia Tech put two runners on early but Pickett dealt a strikeout to end the inning. Ramsey singled in the first and made her way to third via a stolen base and grounder to second, but was left on base.
Breaking up the scoreless game, Carrie Eberle began the second with a solo shot to left, giving Virginia Tech an early 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels threated in the third with the bases loaded on pair of walks after Destiny DeBerry singled to begin the game. However, Virginia Tech got out of the jam on a ground out to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Kristina Burkhardt doubled down the right line to begin the sixth. Katie Bailiff knocked a single up the middle before Delamora drove in the tying run. On her second hit of the Parkinson knocked an RBI-single to right for the winning run.
Carolina 10, Virginia 2 (5 inn.)
Mirroring game one, Virginia Tech scored first, but Carolina quickly took a commanding lead for the 10-2 win in five to close out the doubleheader with a pair of wins.
Ramsey led the Tar Heels with five RBI due to her first collegiate home run and Carolina's first grand slam of the season. Burkhardt plated two runs while DeBerry went 2-for-2 at the plate.
The Hokies jumped on the board first as Sierra Walton sent an RBI-double to right for an early 1-0 lead.
Carolina responded in the second, taking a five-run lead on three hits. Due to solid base-running by Brittany West and Hailey Cole, the pair advanced on a pass ball before West stole home for the tying run. Megan Dray laced the ball through the left side to give the Tar Heels the lead. Then DeBerry singled up the middle to loaded the bases. Ramsey scored one on an RBI-walk before Burkhardt launched a double to right for a 6-1 edge.
The Hokies answered back on an RBI-triple by Emma Strouth, but that would be the final run for Virginia Tech.
The Tar Heels did not quit as Ramsey launched her first home run in Carolina blue to center field for a grand slam – UNC's first of the season, for a 10-2 lead and ultimately, the win.
Pickett tossed her second complete-game win of the day, striking out three with one earned run. Virginia Tech's Jordan Dail took the loss in 1.1 innings with Keely Rochard closed out the final 2.2 innings in relief.
Carolina will play for the series sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
