April 8, 2018 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL – With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, Sierra Parkinson sent a two-run single to center for the 4-3 walk-off win and Carolina's third comeback victory of the weekend over Virginia Tech en route to Sunday's series sweep.
After quickly tying the game at 2-2, the Tar Heels and Hokies put up five scoreless innings to send the game into extras. Caitlyn Nolan gave Virginia Tech a one-run edge heading to the bottom of the eighth. However, Carolina quickly loaded the bases on a walk and bunt-singles by Kiani Ramsey and Taylor Wike to set the stage for Parkinson. With two outs, Parkinson roped her first pitch to center, allowing the tying and winning run to score for Carolina's second walk-off win of the season.
With the 4-3 win, Carolina improves to 22-19 on the season and remains atop the ACC Coastal with a 11-4 league mark. The Hokies fall to 15-23, 2-12 in ACC play.
Ramsey led Carolina at the plate with two hits while Parkinson's two RBI was the game-high. Six Tar Heels each logged a hit while Kristina Burkhardt score two of Carolina's four runs. Brittany Pickett tossed 7.0 innings in relief, picking up her third win of the weekend to improve to 20-6 on the season.
To begin the game, Carolina escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the first as starting pitcher Kellyn Daly dealt her first strikeout and the final out flew to right.
The Tar Heels jumped on the board first, scoring two runs due to Hokie miscues in the first that allowed Burkhardt and Brittany West to come home.
Virginia Tech knotted the game at two with a home run, but a pair of groundouts and Pickett's first strikeout ended the inning.
The Hokies scattered four hits throughout the remaining innings, threatening with two on in the seventh. However, Pickett's five strikeouts held Virginia Tech to two runs in regulation.
Virginia Tech's Caitlyn Nolan went yard on the first pitch of the eighth inning for a 3-2 edge. However, thanks to three hits and two runs in the bottom of the frame, Carolina came out on top for the Tar Heels' second walk-off win of the season.
Carolina's starter, Daly, faced eight batters, striking out one. Pickett gave up a single earned run with six strikeouts in the win. Virginia Tech's Carrie Eberle went the distance in the loss, throwing 7.2 innings with only two earned runs.
