Geoffrey Staton joined the UNC Sports Medicine staff in September 2014 after spending 4 years as an assistant athletic trainer at High Point University. He will serve as the staff athletic trainer for both the Swimming and Diving and Softball programs.
While at HPU, Staton worked with the men's soccer, women's lacrosse and men's
basketball teams; three of the Panthers' most successful programs.
Prior to joining HPU, Staton spent two years at the University of Kentucky
where he earned his master's degree in Athletic Training. His master's thesis focused on ankle range of
motion and dynamic balance in athletes and physically active individuals with
chronic ankle instability. During his
tenure with the Wildcats, he worked primarily with the nationally-ranked
women's gymnastics and dance teams. He also volunteered as the graduate
assistant athletic trainer for the nationally-ranked men's basketball team. As an
athletic trainer for these teams, Staton was responsible for evaluation,
treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of all injuries and coordinated his
efforts with team physicians and surgeons.
A 2007 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Staton earned his
bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science with a specialization in
Athletic Training. While serving as an athletic training student, he worked
with the track & field, softball, men's soccer and men's lacrosse teams, as
well as UNC camps and local high schools.
In the summer of 2007, Staton worked as an athletic training intern with the
NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, helping with coverage for all pre-draft workouts and
summer league practices.
Staton is an NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) and a member of the
National Athletic Trainers' Association. Originally from Greensboro, N.C., he
now resides in Durham.
