1969— Bill Bunting: Men’s Basketball (New Bern, N.C.)
One of three Tar Heels to start in three Final Fours. Starting forward in the 1967, 1968 and 1969 Final Fours, including the 1968 national championship game vs. Lew Alcindor’s UCLA Bruins. Scored 17 points in the Final Four win over Ohio State to send UNC to the title game in ’68. Helped lead UNC to three consecutive outright ACC regular-season and ACC Tournament championships, the only time in ACC history that has been accomplished. Averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds and shot 51.4% from the floor in 95 games. First-team All-ACC in 1969 when he averaged a career-high 18.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Scored a career-best 30 points twice as a senior vs. Virginia Tech and Maryland. Scored 22 points in the 1969 NCAA East Region championship game win over Davidson. Had 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in a home win over Duke as a senior. Scored 1,069 points and grabbed 619 rebounds. Second-round pick in 1969 by the N.Y. Knicks. Played two seasons in the ABA.
