1971— Don McCauley: Football (Garden City, N.Y.)
Inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. One of two Tar Heels (with Mike Voight) to win ACC Player-of-the-Year honors twice (1969 and 1970). Consensus All-America as a senior in 1970, when he broke O.J. Simpson’s NCAA single-season rushing record with 1,720 yards, which still stands as the UNC single-season record by 257 yards. Led the nation in all-purpose yards and set the ACC scoring record with 126 points that season. Also led the ACC in rushing in 1969 with 1,092 yards. That was the first 1,000-yard rushing season by a Tar Heel.
Finished his three-year college career with 3,172 yards, most in UNC history. Still tied for the UNC single-season record with 19 rushing touchdowns in 1970. Rushed for 279 yards and a school-record five touchdowns in a 59-34 win over Duke in his final game in Kenan Stadium in 1970. Broke more than 20 UNC records.
Still is one of only two Tar Heels (with Leon Johnson) to total more than 5,000 all-purpose yards. McCauley rushed for 3,172, had 786 receiving yards and 1,056 return yards.
He rushed for 100 or more yards 17 times, including eight straight games to finish his career, which he capped with a 143-yard, three-touchdown performance against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.
The Baltimore Colts drafted him in the first round in 1971 and he played 11 seasons for the Colts. He rushed for 2,627 yards, caught 333 passes and scored 58 touchdowns as a Colt. He later worked for the Rams Club.
